Samsoe - Denmark's RE-island

Self-Sufficient Danish Island Leads The Way In Clean Energy

Imagine a carbon-neutral island powered solely by renewable energies and freed from the expense of fossil energy, the uncertainty of supplies, and the environmental harm entailed.

This may sound like a dream, but it is an attainable one. In 1997 Samsoe (a 112 km2 island located in the North Sea bay of Kattegat between the mainland of Jutland and the island of Zealand) won a national competition for a 10 year project that was to turn the winning island into a 100% sustainable community by 2008.

The goal of meeting 100% of the energy requirements from renewable energy sources was in fact already achieve in 2003 – a whopping five years ahead of schedule.

Green Belt Denmark will give you the chance to visit this remarkable RE-island.

The day will start out with a visit to Samsoe Energy Academy, where an in-dept introduction to the RE-island concept and the steps taken to convert Samsoe into a 100% energy self-sufficient island will be given.

Additionally, you will get a guided tour of the island and visit a number of its RE-sites, for instance Nordby district heating plant (a combined solar energy/woodchip plant) and one of the 11 onshore wind turbines.
