Waste Management
|
Denmark is the European leader in waste management – a fact that has proven to be a major benefit to both the economy and the environment.
The national waste management goal sets guidelines for an overall recycling level of 60-65%.
Nederkaergaard recycling station in Herning caters for the entire Herning municipal area, and was opened in the autumn of 2004.
Nederkaergaard’s mantra is to make recycling and sorting of waste simple and straightforward for the citizens.
This resulted in record-setting recycling rates (52%) just a few months after the opening of the recycling station.
Visitors will get an on-site guided tour of the premises, meet the staff and see how the sorting of wastes takes place in practice.

Did you know that waste is a hidden resource that can be used to create clean, renewable energy in the form of electricity and heat while at the same time lowering CO2 emissions, our dependency on fossil fuels and saving space in local landfills?
The waste model used for commercial and industrial waste in Denmark is designed in accordance with the “polluter pays principle”. This means that the sorting, collection, transportation and treatment of wastes is paid for by the users of the system.
